The Next Trend: Hiking Boots & Sundresses

Before interning at Marie Claire in NYC,  I expected to be surrounded by socialites in  sky-high, expensive heels & Michelle Obama-worthy, sophisticated dresses.

Upon arriving at the internship I was introduced to a fabulous new trend-- clunky work boots paired with frilly sundresses.

The only time I had seen this look was when my mom would feed our horses before church and doesn't want to get her cute shoes dirty.  Who knew my mom was so trendy?

Through careful observation I have [sarcastically] picked up on 5 things that [apparently] make this trend work:

1) Don't lace up the boots.  Instead let the tongue flop and the laces drag on the dirty asphalt.

2) Add some poo to the sides.  It's all or nothing, girls.  They need to look well-loved.  I don't mean simply rubbing your mom's prepackaged potting soil on the boots-- authenticity counts.

3) The dress should be excessively girly-- perhaps from the Juniors department.  Extra points for lace, chiffon, and spaghetti straps.

4) Shave your legs--or not.  It's really up to you.  It's all about awkwardly clashing femininity & masculinity.  Consider getting a butch haircut while you're at it... or growing out your armpit hair.

5) Clunk... loudly!  There is really no better way to emphasize how trendy you are being... it's about standing out and making fashionistas jealous.  So shuffle those boots loudly, ladies!

What do you think of this look?  Will you be rockin' it this summer?
LOVELOVELOVE,
Dylan

  1. Yuck, I think this trend should only be used the way your mom used it.

...I like this trend. I just visited Europe and a lot of people were wearing some form of lace-up black boot with sundresses or skirts. It's like leather jackets + sundresses.

I like the well-worn hiking boots but I'll skip the girly dress. How about khaki shorts?

  4. I don't like this at all! It's like mix and matching a pretty skirt with your dad's t-shirt (or socks and strappy sandals).. NOT COOL!

Not shaving your legs or armpits is not a "masculine" trend. It's women throwing off patriarchal oppression. It's women doing what they want because they want to, not because men tell them what's right. So next time you see an unshaven woman, tell yourself, "I want to be accepted for shaving my legs so I'll accept her for her decision to not shave."

And your comment on "butch" haircuts is downright ignorant.

I have to agree with Ellen on the comment about "butch" haircuts. I enjoyed the rest of the article, but that word can be quite jarring- and I think that in this context it seems almost homophobic, even though I'm sure that's not how it was meant.

It seems impractical. I like mixing menswear with feminine styles, but if I wear my hiking boots, then I'm going to go hiking.
My college roommate rarely shaves her legs. On her, it's difficult to notice, and none of her boyfriends (as far as I know) have ever complained. Personally, I like the feel of smooth legs on myself.
As for butch haircuts, I think some women pull them off quite well and can still easily maintain a feminine air if that's their aim.
